According to the journal, Nature, researchers reported on October 8, 2014 that the Babirusa—or pig deer—is "among the earliest dated figurative depictions worldwide, if not the earliest one." Discovered in a limestone cave on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the painting is believed to be at least 35, 400 years old using the uranium decay technique to date the substance that encrusts the wall painting.
